Weekly Observations

  • January wind resource finished on a low note, with wind speeds down 8% compared to the prior week. For the month, wind resource finished down ~10% compared to the prior year.
  • Despite lower resource, January wind generation still improved compared to the prior year, driven by higher capacity and better utilization, particularly in the Midwest and MidAtlantic. With that said, Texas wind generation has underperformed, down 5% in January, marking the first year over year decline and despite solid wind capacity adds in 2020.
