Weekly Observations

  • Wind Resource. Wind speeds continue to lag y/y across much of the US here in May – a carry over from some soft weeks at the end of April. That said, 2Q21 is on track to be flat to slightly higher vs. year ago. Wind speeds across much of the U.S. faltered last week, with the total resource we monitor dropping 2% w/w (Californa, East Coast and Texas were all down w/w).
  • Wind Generation. Lower wind speeds across the US drove a 9% decline in US Wind power generation w/w; however, 2Q is still tracking higher y/y thanks to strong wind speeds early in April and a higher installed base of generation capacity.

About Lium's Windometer

This exercise synthesizes data from a wide range of sources in the U.S. wind power market to reveal trends in generation, utilization, and the strength of the wind resource itself. The weekly snapshot also provides historical context for this week’s wind market in the U.S. relative to prior periods.
