Weekly Observations (Week Of 6/4/2021)

  • In the weeks ahead, we will be watching ERCOT closely
  • Demand picked up a bit there in the first week of June (+1.7% w/w)…
  • …But it’s really picking up now with ERCOT warning customers this week to conserve power as wholesale prices spike in Texas with demand increasing while more plants than normal are offline (read more)
  • Wind weakness isn’t helping, and you can see the big dip in wind gen above and in this related update
  • Meanwhile, U.S. electricity consumption took a step back with dips in the MidCon, NE/Atlantic and Southeast more than offsetting strength in Texas, California and Florida this week
  • Solar power generation was the only supply source that increased w/w, posting a modest 150bps uptick
