Weekly Observations

  • Wind Resource. It was very windy last week. After some difficult weeks early in the month, May wind resource had a pretty spectacular finish to the month. Aside from south Texas, the major corridors we actively monitor all saw big improvements week-over-week, led by the Midwest (+39%), the Northwest and Central (+34%) and MidAtlantic (+29%). The important northwest Texas market was +17% week to week. With the strong finish, May ended up +1% y/y and 2Q21 to-date is tracking 2% higher on wind resource.
  • Wind Generation. Higher wind speeds across the US translated to a big 30% week to week pop in US Wind power generation. With this resource uplift and a larger installed base of generation capacity, 2Q21 is now tracking up 17% year over year.

About Lium's Windometer

This exercise synthesizes data from a wide range of sources in the U.S. wind power market to reveal trends in generation, utilization, and the strength of the wind resource itself. The weekly snapshot also provides historical context for this week’s wind market in the U.S. relative to prior periods.
